An intimate, intense love story, Janáček’s moving tale of marital crisis and sexual guilt is a perfect blend of lyric music and drama.. Within two years of completing The Adventures of Mr Brouček, the composer embarked on this extraordinary operatic masterpiece, inspired by his love for a much younger woman, it's one of Janacek's most lyrical scores, but also one of his most powerful. This is a brand new production, designed specially for this Scottish Opera tour

Torn between her love for a younger man and what she knows to be her duty as a wife, Kátya Kabanová examines the private horror and public shame of an unhappily married woman living in a claustrophobic Russian community. When her overbearing mother-in-law forces her confession, Kátya comes to the painful realisation that she has only one way out.
The production is accompanied by piano and is sung in English.
