Scottish Ballet presents
The Nutcracker

Choreography: Ashley Page
Music: Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Designs: Antony McDonald

At a party in the Stahlbaum’s family home. Drosselmeyer, the children’s enigmatic godfather, presents them with a nutcracker doll – and so begins a dreamlike journey of discovery for the youngest daughter, Marie.

The first in Ashley Page’s trilogy of fairytales retold with a fresh and wicked vision for contemporary audiences, Scottish Ballet’s The Nutcracker transports audiences into the magical world of ETA Hoffman by way of Weimar Germany, conjuring up a dreamlike surrealist narrative to chart the magical journey of a young girl’s awakening.

"The Nutcracker that Ashley Page and Antony McDonald contrived for Scottish Ballet was, and still is, something of a trailblazer. In 2003, this bold, inventive Nutcracker signified that Scottish Ballet was dancing its way out of the woods. It looks even better now. - 5*" - The Herald

"Claire Robertson’s spirited Marie is an expressive mix of vulnerability and determination – utterly deserving of Erik Cavallari’s noble Prince, their closing pas-de-deux a radiant outpouring of consummate partnering worth a galaxy of stars in itself. - 5*" - The Herald

"It presents the ballet’s final pas de deux (between the tale’s young lovers, danced exquisitely by Erik Cavallari and Claire Robertson) with a beautifully executed classicism which exemplifies the style and intelligence of this, another fabulously successful Scottish Ballet Christmas show. - 5*" - The Daily Telegraph

"Sheer balletic beauty. The tutu-clad snowflakes and pretty poppy flowers deliver pointe work to die for, while the grand pas-de-deux between principal dancers Claire Robertson and Erik Cavallari is a spell-binding blend of romance and masterful technique. -4*" - The Scotsman

The Nutcracker

After being at the Saturday matinee at Aberdeen I wish to aplaud the wonderful show and through it the opportunity it gave to so many children and parents of all ages and gendre. The show was splendid and I wish to thank the performers and no exuces to thank the many many children who sat there so good through the whole performance, many a child snuggled onto an adult knee and with teddies and bed pals in hand were so enthralled. Congratulations Scottish Ballet for this wonderful performance and to our young citizens may you go on enjoying the productions our theatre can give you. THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL AFTERNOON
